Footprint

A product footprint is the sum of all impacts of a product, from raw materials are extracted from nature till the product is disposed of as final waste and returned to nature. Results reflect the total impact caused by a change in demand for the product.

By-products are modelled using market substitution, and market supply mixes include only un-constrained suppliers, i.e. suppliers that can change their production volume. The result is also known as a consequential footprint.

The calculation method is called Life Cycle Assessment and is standardised in ISO 14040 and ISO 14044.

Footprint extent

Cradle to gate (production) is the part of the footprint that covers all steps until and including the production of the product. It does not include the parts of the footprint that occurs after the product has left the gate of the production facility.

Cradle to consumer (market) is the part of the footprint that covers all steps until and including the (retail) market. The inputs to a product market are products from different producers. For example, the market for televisions in Denmark has inputs of televisions from different countries.

Cradle to grave is the full footprint covering all activities that are affected, from raw materials are extracted from nature, over production and consumption activities till the product is disposed of as final waste and returned to nature.

Climate Footprint

Location
Location: refers to the country or region, for which the footprint is presented. The world is divided into 43 countries and five ‘rest-of-world (RoW)’ regions.
Year
Year: refers to the year of the data used to calculate the footprint. Currently, only data for 2016 are available.
Climate metric
Climate metric: refers to how green house gas emissions are translated into an indicator to represent climate change impacts. Currently, the IPCC global warming potential (GWP) (100 year time horizon) and the Global Temperature Potential (GTP) (20 year time horizon) are available. Both are from IPCC (AR6 Synthesis Report: Climate Change 2023).

Database: We recommend using v1.1.0 for now. v.1.0.0 is only there to showcase the functionality.

How Do We Get the Data Right?

This question has taken up all of our time for the past 4 years. BONSAI Climate Footprint Analyser has been developed through a large project at Aalborg University, funded by the KR Foundation in 2021. 2-0 LCA, Leiden University, and CICERO are partnering the project, which ends in 2025.
